Womb was my first documentary photography project, begun to champion the rights of maternal, reproductive and sexual health for women, girls, and members of the BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ communities. The photographs I share above are from many people I interviewed concerning their own womb or their work connected to the womb. The project details the joys and, equally as often, the frustrations and sorrows attached to dealing with this part of human anatomy. It is the source from which we each begin life and it can continue to affect humans in a wide variety of ways: from menarche, pregnancy, adoption, menstruation, miscarriage to cancer, infertility, abortion, multiples, gender reassignment, menopause. The list goes on…
The womb holds enormous mythic symbolism; it is the place we each begin. My own relationship with my womb has been complex. I wanted to learn how other peoples' lives are affected, good or bad, by this part of human anatomy. This project is currently on hold, though it may resurface again soon.
There are many stories attached, like an umbilical cord, to the womb. Do you have a story to share about how the womb affects/has affected your life? If you’re interested to participate and/or learn more about the myriad ways the uterus affects our lives, please reach out.
