Cáithnín means “a speck of dust, a husk of corn, a snowflake, a subatomic particle... But, most evocatively of all, it also means the goosebumps you feel in moments when you contemplate how everything is interrelated and how tiny we are in relation to the whole, like that feeling when you realise, or, maybe, remember, that we are all one – all unified.” | Manchán Magan. Cáithnín is a series in homage to stillness, connection, the stardust of each other and our planet, its elements. It’s also an exploration and celebration of awe, something I first encountered as an adult alone in 1991 on the southwest coast of Ireland when I was enveloped by fog so thick I could not see my own body. I examine the ways ever-increasing technological distractions prevent us from connecting with our environment and each other on a deeper, more meaningful level, to our own peril and our planet’s. I meet and document humans whose work embodies how vital it is to pay attention to our environment and its many lessons if we only commit to look, listen and act.
